Extraction of CBD from hemp and marijuana plant material is being used to produce oil that is high in quality and safe. There are a few methods to accomplish this. Potency, flavor, safety for human consumption are the main goals to consider when thinking about which process would work best.
CBD is only one of many cannabinoids that are in hemp and marijuana plants. Cannabinoids have been used for thousands of years by humans. The Endocannabinoid system consists of cannabinoid receptors and the enzymes that synthesize them. There are receptors for these compounds in our skin, the digestive tract, reproductive organs, and brain. This makes CBD easily absorbed by the body. CB1 is a receptor that can be found in the nervous system and other organs. CB2 receptors can be found in the immune system. Figuring out your product and how it will be used will decide which method is best for your needs.
The first method, Co2 extraction, safely removes the oil at a low temperature that preserves many cannabinoids that are lost with other methods. By utilizing high pressure and cold temperatures, the Co2 liquifies. This supercritical state preserves the enzymes and vitamins, making a more desirable product. The end result is an oil that is honey colored and packed with cannabinoids. The oil is considered to be high quality and has the least number of steps to complete. It is a fairly intensive process that involves more equipment. Even though it is more expensive, this is the preferred method.
The second method, ethanol extraction, is a process in which alcohol is used as a solvent. As the extraction is taking place, other compounds are extracted as well, such as chlorophyll. Filtering removes the green color and grassy taste that come along with this process. These would be undesirable for consumption and adds another step to removing the oil. Producing the cannabinoid oil this way is safe for human consumption and doesn’t require much equipment.
Olive and Canola Extraction
The third method, oil extraction, simply uses canola or olive oil to bind with natural plant oils forming an infusion. Using oil to extract the compounds is very low tech and is safer than using chemicals in a lab setting. This method can be used to make low concentrated CDB. Another factor when considering to infuse an oil is how the plants were grown. It would need to be made with plant material that has not been grown with pesticides and other chemicals. You can easily make your own oils with this method, but they are perishable.
Using these three methods will produce three different products. Human consumption has to be considered when making CBD oil. If you want a high quality oil, the Co2 method would be a great choice. For a product that would be used for cooking, an olive oil extraction would work perfectly.
